Michelle Stephens, Ph.D.

Michelle Stephens, Ph.D., is a licensed psychoanalyst and Dean of the Humanities at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She is the author of Skin Acts: Race, Psychoanalysis and The Black Male Performer, (Duke, 2014); and recent essays on race and psychoanalysis such as: "'Playing Out' Our 'Playing in the Dark': Racial Enactments and Psychoanalytic Institutions' (Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), October 2018); "Islands of Encounter: A Reflection on the Place of Psychoanalysis" (Studies in Gender and Sexuality, Vol. 19, No. 1, 2018); and "Skin-Things, Fleshy Matters and the Phantasy of Race: Lacan's Myth of the Lamella" in Lacan and Race: Racism, Identity and Psychoanalytic Theory eds. Sheldon George and Derek Hook (Routledge, forthcoming 2020). She is a graduate of the Licensure Qualifying Program at The William Alanson White Institute and a co-founder in 2015 of the Study Group on Race and Psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institute.
